How should we communicate with those who are different from us? What is right, true, and good in communicating with different others? To me, these questions are inherently interesting, but there is a practical reason for thinking about these issues. The world we live in is getting more diverse by the day. Here in small town southeastern Minnesota, there is a growing Amish community, more people with Mexican and Hmong backgrounds, an increasing diversity in age groups, and people with a variety of sexual orientations. The companies in our small town work with suppliers across the globe and the universities host students from around the world. Diversity just is.
We have choices about how we are going to encounter that diversity. This course is designed to let you wrestle with issues you will face for the rest of your life. I don't have the answers, but I hope that, together, we can learn ways to think clearly and compassionately about these issues.
